GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE:

President Obama gave an excellent presentation in Connecticut Sunday.  he spoke from the standpoint of being a father and his own relationship with his two daughters.  He could at least partially relate with those parents who had lost their children because of a madman.  Let us hope his concern does not translate into a full bore campaign against the millions of us who enjoy owning a gun.

    ANOTHER TRAGEDY IN CONNECTICUT--27 DEAD!

Many anti-gun people will leap on this story, demanding a repeal of the 2nd ammendment to the Constitution.  At this point in the investigation, it would seem that the guns belonged to parents and were not locked in a gun safe- an unsafe practice for any responsible gun owner.  There are other ways to kill.

Perhaps we should also look at he apparent love of violence here in the USA.  Our children are bombaarded with violence in our movies, on our TV, in our computer games and yes, even in our football games.  It is within the power of the people to stop it or as least slow it down.

    STOP THE VIOLENCE!

REGARDING THE STAND OFF IN WASHINGTON.  THOMAS JEFFERSON ONCE SAID THESE WORDS:

WE MUST NOT LET OUR RULERS LOAD US WITH PERPETUAL DEBT. WE MUST MAKE OUR SELECTION BETWEEN ECONOMY AND LIBERTY OR PROFUSION AND SERVITUDE.  IF WE RUN INTO SUCH DEBTS AS THAT, WE MUST BE TAXED IN OUR MEAT, IN OUR DRINK, IN OUR NECESSITIES AND COMFORTS, IN OUR LABORS AND IN OUR AMUSEMENTS, FOR OUR CALLINGS AND OUR CREEDS, OUR PEOPLE MUST COME TO LABOR. 16 HOURS IN THE 24 GIVE EARNINGS OF THESE TO THE GOVERNMENT FOR THEIR DEBTS AND DAILY EXPENSESz: AND THE SIXTEENTH BEING SSUFFICIENT TO AFFORD US BREAD.  WE MUST LIVE.

"THIS IS THE TENDENCY OF ALL HUMAN GOVERNMENTS.  A DEPARTURE FROM PRINCIPLE BECOMES A PRECENDENT FOR A SECOND: THAT SECOND FOR A THIRD AND SO ON, TILL THE BULK OF SOCIETY IS REDUCED TO MEERE AUTOMATONS OF MISERY, TO HAVE NO SENSIBILITIES LEFT BUT FOR SINNING AND SUFFERING."

JEFFERSON HAD A WAY WITH WORDS.

THE DAY I MET BUSTER BROWN!

Holland once had a well known store named the Buster Brown Shoe Store.  It was located on 8th street back when America manufactured all the shoes we wore.  When I was a lad, I had a pair of Buster Brown Shoes.  they were sturdy and lasted a long time.  They also had a point system which earned credit toward premiums.  I got a nice two cell flashlight with a Buster Brown trademark on the battery container.

Many years later I was in the barber shop in Saugatuck.  Listening to the conversation, I heard the man in the chair lived in St. Louis and he was Mr. Brown.  When he got out of the chair, I asked him if he was Buster Brown.  He said he was and i shook his hand and found he summered in the Saugatuck area. We had a nice conversation.

I'm sure Mr Brown is no longer with us, but his shoe company is still florishing.  The company grossed 732.2 million in the third quarter, but they no longer have a store in holland.  Some of you may remember the Spaulding Shoe Store.  Today you can buy the brand under Naturalizer and many others, however many are made overseas.

MY PATERNAL GRANDFATHER LIVED TO BE 98 YEARS OLD.  He once said to me, it was not a lot of fun getting old, because many of your friends are gone.

At 89, I am finding his words to be true.  I don't do the things I once did, like running 5 miles, walking twenty-five miles or going through the Infantry Infiltration Course.  At this point in life, I wake up looking for spots of my body that are free of pain, and wonderful when it is without any discomfort. Yes it does happen.  I figure God has richly blessed me.-- just enjoy it,

I often walk as many mornings as I can get out our safely, Otherwise check out the treadmill.  Check the blood pressure often and keep your doctors phone number handy.  Read the obits daily.  One day I'll be there and so will you.

Last week I attended the funeral of my brother in Lansing.  The services were held at a local funeral home, followed by a gathering at the First Baptist Church.  The church is very close to the Capitol building and as I passed the Center of our State goverment, I noted a large crowd gathered there to protest the vote on the Right to Work Law.  There was a lot of yelling, swearing and other evidence of unhappiness both inside and outside.  I did not stay, since our funeral was more important, however I heard and read about it later. I would have to say, the crowd set a poor example for the school children that were there to see government in action.

    A SECRETARY OF BUSINESS

President Obama has said that he plans to create a "secretery

of Business" because he knows he has a problem with business and

the solution exists in ...more government.

The new department would consolidate and coodinate the six federal agencies that deal with trade and commerce, so American business would have to contact only one organization for help, according to the Associated Press. The proposal is supposed to simplify mattersWill this create more wealthy people to pay those high taxes? Perhaps this is a job for Mitt Romney.

    SELF CPR

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A HEART ATTACK AND YOU ARE ALONE.

SUDDENLY YOU START EXPERIENCING SEVERE PAIN IN YOUR CHEST THAT STARTS TO RADIATE OUT INTO YOUR ARM AND UP TO YOUR JAW BONE.  YOU MAY NOT BE NEAR A HOSPITAL AND YOU ARE ALONE.  WHAT CAN YOU DO.  CALL 911 AND START DOING THE SELF CPR.  YOU HAVE ABOUT 10 SECONDS BEFORE YOU FEEL FAINT.  YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF BY COUGHING REPEATEDLY AND VERY VIGOROUSLY--TAKE A DEEP BREATH BEFORE EACH COUGH, AND THE COUGH SHOULD BE FROM DEEP INSIDE THE CHEST.

A BREATH AND A COUGH SHOULD BE REPEATED EVERY TWO SECONDS WITHUT LET UP UNTIL HELP ARRIVES OR UNTIL THE HEART FEELS LIKE IT IS BEATING NORMALLY AGAIN.

DEEP BREATHS GET OXYGEN INTO THE LUNGS AND THE COUGHING SQUEEZES THE HEART AND KEEPS THE BLOOD CIRCULATING.  THE SQUEEZING PRESSURE ON THE HEART ALSO HELPS IT REGAIN NORMAL RHYTHM.

IF YOU ARE IN A CAR, HEAD FOR THE NEAREST HOSPITAL TO GET CHECKED OUT.

PASS THIS INFORMATION AROUND,  YOU MAY SAVE A LIFE!!!

There was a time when I did not care for Christmas music.  In the advertising businesss, Christmas starts in September.  By December 25, we.ve had it already.

Things  have changed.  There is such a derth of any music on radio these days that we are eager to hear those old tunes.  Much of the broadcast day is filled wiith what we call "talking heads"--people who drone on by the hour about inane material that put many listeners to sleep.  Now we welcome music, any music.  Some station now play Christmas music, the year around.  A bit ridiculous, perhaps, but "HARK THE HERALD ANGLES SING" really sounds good. What's your preference?

The lights of Christmas are plentiful and beautiful, urging you to spend your money to make everybody happy.  Does it?  It depends whether the real spirit is within you.  There are many opportunities for giving that will help others in these hard economic times.  Don't let another year go by, that you don't halp make someone's holiday happerier. Give a toy to the Toys for  Tots, a dollar to the Salvation Army.  There are many opportunities.

ENJOY THE PARADE OF LIGHTS TUESDAY NIGHT IN DOWNTOWN HOLLAND??

WELCOME TO THE THIRTY HOUR WEEK!

The new health law contains a provision which redefines a full time week as an average of 30 hours.  What will happen to the work week?  Will many employers cut the work week to twenty nine hours to avoid paying health insurance to their workers? This could be an answer for small business to avoid paying insurance and the fine for not paying for insurance.  Will labor laws change to make 30 hours the norm and all over 30 will be overtime?  WAIT AND SEE.
