HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY!  ITS A DAY FOR CELEBRATING, IRISH OR NOT.  A DAY FOR WEARING SOMETHING GREEN, GREEN HATS, GREEN BEER, A GREEN RIVER IN CHICAGO AND CORN BEEF AND CABBAGE ON MANY TABLES.

ST PATRICK REPUTEDLY BROUGHT CHRISTIANITY  TO IRELAND, ALTHOUGH SOME SAY HE MERELY ORGANIZED THE ELEMENTS ALREADY THERE.  HE DID NOT DRIVE THE SNAKES OUT OF IRELAND BECAUSE THEY WERE NEVER THERE.  MAYBE THATS WHY ITS A NICE PLACE TO VISIT.  THE PARADE IS PROBABLY AN AMERICAN TRADITION, MORE THAN IRISH, BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE SHABBY TREATMENT OF THE IRISH BY AMERICANS AND WANTING TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THOSE WHO CAME HERE TO ESCAPE THE POTATO FAMINE.

IRISH OR NOT WE CAN ALL CELEBRATE THE GOOD THINGS THE IRISH HAVE BROUGHT TO OUR SHORES BUT GO EASY ON THE PUB OFFERINGS.

I'LL BE WEARING MY IRISH HAT TODAY.  ITS NOT GREEN, BUT IT WAS MADE BY J. J. MAGUIRE IN DONEGAL.

OUR PARADE HAPPENED LAST SATURDAY, SO WE CAN CELEBRATE TWO DAYS. ARE YOU CELEBRATING?

WATCHING THE PROGRAM ON PBS LAST NIGHT ABOUT THE BIG BAND ERA, BROUGHT BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES.  THE FAVORITE MUSIC IN OUR LIVES IS USUALLY WHEN WE GO THROUGH OUR "ROMANTIC" STAGE, AND THE BIG BAND YEARS WERE THAT TIME FOR ME.  IT WAS WHEN DATING WAS JUST THAT AND MERELY HOLDING HANDS WITH A GIRL WAS A THRILL.  THE FIRST KISS GOODNIGHT, LEFT ME WALKING ON AIR FOR HOURS.  A RADIO IN THE CAR PROVIDED MUSICAL BACKGROUND, WITH THOSE BIG BAND SOUNDS.  FOR THOSE WHO DANCED, THREE PAVILIONS IN WEST MICHIGAN, GAVE US AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR THOSE BIG BANDS IN PERSON--SISTER LAKES, FRUITPORT AND THE BIG PAVILION IN SAUGATUCK.  MY FIRST LIVE LISTEN TO A BIG BAND WAS A NIGHT IN ROCKFORD ILLINOIS, WHEN SAMMY KAYE AND HIS ORCHESTRA APPEARED AT A LOCAL THEATER.  IT WAS SPELLBINDING TO THINK ALL THOSE MUSICIANS WERE THE BEST OF THOSE WHO TRIED OUT FOR A CHAIR IN THE BAND.  RADIO DID A LOT TO PROMOTE THE BIG BAND SOUND AND WHEN I BEGAN MY JOB AT WHTC, THOSE BANDS WERE VERY MUCH A PART OF THE VARIOUS PROGRAMS WE FEATURED DURING THE DAY.  FRED MARTIN'S SOFT TONES AT NIGHT ON THE 1450 CLUB, COULD MAKE YOU THINK YOU WERE RIGHT IN ONE OF THE BIG BALLROOMS.  IT WAS A GREAT ERA BUT EVENTUALLY YOU WENT FROM GLENN MILLER TO SPIKE JONES.

    ANYBODY REMEMBER?

YOUR CENSUS FORM WILL BE ARRIVING IN THE MAIL SOMETIME THIS WEEK. STAND UP AND BE COUNTED. MAKE SURE YOU OR SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY FILLS IT OUT AND RETURNS IT.  ITS RELATIVELY SIMPLE WITH ONLY TEN QUESTIONS AND MANY THINGS DEPEND ON GETTING A CORRECT COUNT OF HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE NOW IN THE USA. FEDERAL MONEY IS A FACT OF LIFE NOW, AND HOW MUCH OUR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS GET DEPENDS ON THE COUNT. HOW MANY CONGRESSMEN MICHIGAN SENDS TO WASHING DEPENDS ON THE COUNT.  SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE COUNTED.  IF YOU FAIL TO MAIL IT BACK, A CENSUS TAKER WILL COME TO YOUR HOME TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE INCLUDED.

YOU DO WANT TO BE INCLUDED, DON'T YOU?

ARE YOU FOLLOWING THE "DEBATE" ON THE HEALTH BILL?

WE ARE SEEING  DEMOCRACY AT IT WORST, WITH POLITICAL SHENANIGANS BEHIND THE SCENES TO PASS A BILL THAT MOST OF OUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS HAVE NOT READ. NOW THE RULES ARE BEING RE WRITTEN TO "BLEND THE SENATE AND HOUSE VERSION AND DEEM IT "PASSED."  NANCY PELOSI, IN SPEAKING TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES THE OTHER DAY SAID, "WE HAVE TO PASS THE BILL, SO YOU CAN FIND OUT WHAT'S IN IT." IF THE NEW "RULES" ARE REFASHIONED, THE HOUSE WILL ONLY VOTE ON A "CORRECTIONS" BILL, SO HOUSE MEMBERS CAN SAY THEY DID NOT ACTUALLY VOTE ON THE FULL HEALTH BILL, ONLY ON CHANGES.

ALL THIS, DESPITE A PUBLIC OPINION POLL THAT DOES NOT FAVOR THE HEALTH BILL AS IT STANDS AND CLAMORS FOR A REDO.  MEANWHILE BE READY TO PAY MORE PAYROLL TAX FOR MEDICARE.  THIS TAX, AS NOW WRITTEN IN THE BILL WILL BE EXTENDED TO OTHER INCOME AS WELL.

JOHN KENNEDY SAID, "THE BASIS OF EFFECTIVE GOVERNMENT IS PUBLIC CONFIDENCE AND THAT CONFIDENCE IS ENDANGERED WHEN ETHICAL STANDARDS FALTER OR APPEAR TO FALTER."

    ARE WE AT THAT POINT?

DOES ONE SIZE FIT ALL WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATION?

APPARENTLY A PANEL OF EDUCATORS THINK SO.  THEY HAVE DEVELOPED STANDARDS FOR ENGLISH AND MATH WHICH WILL REWRITE TEXTBOOKS AND RE-EDUCATE TEACHERS SO ALL CHILDREN ACROSS THE COUNTY WILL BE STUDYING THE IDENTICAL MATERIAL IN HOPES OF RAISING THE STANDARDS OF LEARNING.  THE PLAN WOULD INCLUDE A LIST OF BOOKS WHICH STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ AT A GIVEN AGE.  THE PLAN DOES NOT COVER OTHER SUBJECTS--ONLY ENGLISH AND MATH.  AT THIS POINT IN TIME, ALASKA AND TEXAS HAVE OPTED OUT OF THE PROGRAM, REJECTING FEDERAL INTERFERENCE IN THEIR EDUCATIONAL PROCESS.

WILL THE PLAN AFFECT HOME SCHOOLING AND PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS? MANY QUESTIONS ARE STILL PENDING, BUT THE PLANNERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME ACTION ON THE PROPOSAL IN MAY.

DO YOU THINK THERE IS TOO MUCH FEDERAL OVERSIGHT IN THE EDUCATION OF OUR CHILDREN?

BUICK AND CADILLAC OWNERS CAN BREATH A SIGH OF RELIEF.  CROWN MOTORS HAS BEEN ASSURED THAT THEY CAN CONTINUE TO SELL AND SERVICE THESE FINE AMERICAN PRODUCTS.  THIS IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  WHEN DEALERS SELL AMERICAN PRODUCTS, IT CREATES AMERICAN JOBS.

NOW IF CHRYSLER WILL WAKE UP TO THE FACT THAT THEY CANNOT SELL PRODUCT IN AN AREA THAT DOES NOT HAVE A DEALER. AND GIVE THE DEALERSHIP BACK TO THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER, ALL THE PRODUCT OWNERS WILL BE HAPPY.

IF YOU FLY AN AMERICAN FLAG, DRIVE AN AMERICAN CAR.

THREE SIMPLE THINGS, NO MORE, NO LESS

    COMBINE TO MAKE MAN'S HAPPINESS

SOMEONE TO LOVE, SOMETHING TO DO

LAST WEEK ON TALK OF THE TOWN WE DISCUSSED THE BATAAN DEATH MARCH AND A BOOK "TEARS IN THE DARKNESS" BY MICHAEL AND ELIZABETH NORMAN. FOR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO PURSUE THIS HORRIBLE PART OF HISTORY. OTHER BOOKS ON THE SUBJECT ARE "WE BAND OF ANGELS"  THE STORY OF THE NURSES ON BATAAN, WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH NORMAN, AND ""DEATH MARCH" BY DONALD KNOX, THE STORY TOLD BY THE MEN WHO ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED THE SAVAGE MISTREATMENT.

SINCE THESE PRISONERS WERE TAKEN IN THE VERY EARLY PART OF WWII, THOSE THAT SURVIVED, HAD TO ENDURE YEARS OF MISTREATMENT, AT THE HANDS OF THE JAPANESE.  THERE WAS AN EFFORT TO SEEK REPARATIONS FROM THE JAPANESE AFTER THE WAR, BUT OUR OWN GOVERNMENT DID NOT PURSUE IT.

PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST GRUESOME STORIES, IS THAT RELATED IN "FLYBOYS" BY JAMES BRADLEY. OUR AIRMEN WERE SHOT DOWN WHILE ATTACKING THE ISLAND OF CHICHI JIMA, THE JAPANESE COMMUNICATIONS CENTER FOR THE ENTIRE PACIFIC. THEY WERE CAPTURED, AND BEHEADED AND OFTEN PARTS OF THEIR BODIES WERE EATEN BY JAPANESE OFFICERS.

I KNOW OF ONLY ONE LOCAL MAN WHO LIVED OUT THE WAR AS A JAPANESE PRISONER, THAT WAS JAY NEVENZEL, A MARINE WHO WAS TAKEN PRISONER ON WAKE ISLAND, AND WORKED IN THE JAPANESE COAL MINES.

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY OTHER PRISONERS OF WWII?  THEIR STORIES SHOULD BE TOLD.

THE WAR WAS OVER. THE SIXTH INFANTRY DIVISION WAS ABOARD SHIPS IN LINGAYEN GULF AWAITING OUR TRIP TO KOREA IN OCTOBER 1945.  AFTER THREE DAYS, WE LEARNED THAT WE WERE AWAITING THE MODERATION OF THE OKINAWA TYPHOON.  WHEN WE FINALLY GOT UNDERWAY, WE EXPERIENCED SOME REALLY ROUGH SEAS AND THREE DAYS OF MISERY BEGAN FOR ME.  I HAD A BAD CASE OF NAUSEA MARA (SEA SICKNESS), AS DID MANY OTHERS.  AT THAT TIME WE DID NOT HAVE DRUGS THAT WOULD GIVE US RELIEF, SO WE SUFFERED.  WE DID NOT EAT, IN FACT THE VERY THOUGHT OF FOOD ONLY WORSENED THE CONDITION.  AT THE END OF THREE DAYS, A BUDDY BROUGHT ME A SANDWICH FROM THE MESS, AND I TASTED GOOD AND I KEPT IT DOWN.  THE MISERY WAS OVER AND I WAS ABLE TO ENJOY THE REST OF THE TRIP TO KUNSAN, KOREA, WHILE REPLENISHING MY BODY FLUIDS.

NAPOLEON ONCE USED CAMELS AS TRANSPORTATION FOR TROOPS AND FOUND THE MOTION OF THE CAMELS MADE THE TROOPS SICK.  SEA SICKNESS HAD SLOWED MANY MILITARY ACTIONS EVER SINCE. SURELY THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TROOPS THAT WENT ASHORE IN THE D-DAY INVASION WAS CUT A LOT, BY THIS MALADY.  FOR MOST SEAGOING PEOPLE TODAY, DRAMIMINE IS THE ANSWER, PROVIDED IT IS ADMINISTERED IN THE PROPER DOSAGE. BUT I HAVE NOT YET CONSIDERED A CRUISE AS A FUN THING TO DO.

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED NAUSEA MARA?

A RECENT SENTINEL ARTICLE TOLD OF MEXICAN DRUG TRAFFICKERS FARMING ON U. S. PUBLIC LANDS.  THEY ARE TAKING A PAGE FROM THE FOREIGN CAR MANUFACTURERS AND TAKING THE PRODUCT HOME TO THE CONSUMERS, VASTLY INCREASING THEIR MARIIJUANA MARKET WITHOUT THE BORDER CROSSING HASSLE.  THEIR "FARMS" ARE IN NATIONAL FORESTS AND GUARDED WITH ARMED GUARDS.

I ASSUME THEY DON'T BOTHER TO OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP CREDENTIALS. THESE "HOMESTEADERS" KNOW WE WILL NOT USE DEFOLIANTS ON THEIR CROPS, BECAUSE WE WANT TO PRESERVE THE SURROUNDING TREES SO WE KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING, BUT WE APPARENTLY ARE UNWILLING OR UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

ANY SUGGESTIONS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM??

A NEWS STORY THIS MORNING TELLS US THAT WE ARE SPENDING 152 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR ON THE RESULTS OF UNSAFE FOOD.  CONGRESS IS LOOKING INTO MORE INSPECTION AS A WAY TO SOLVE AT LEAST PART OF THE PROBLEM.  VARIOUS TYPES OF FOOD POISONING ARE REAL  WE DON'T GET THE BENEFIT OF THOROUGH INSPECTIONS, PARTICULARLY OF MEAT AND VEGETABLES.  WHERE DO OUR VEGETABLES AND FRUIT COME FROM, MEXICO, BRAZIL, ARGENTINA OR SOME OTHER PLACE WHERE THEY MAY NOT HAVE SUPERVISION OVER THE SAFETY OF WHAT WE EAT?  OUR INSPECTION PROCESS IN THIS COUNTRY IS LESS THAN PERFECT. AT LEAST IN THE SUMMER TIME, WE HAVE THE FARMERS MARKET, AND THERE ARE LOCAL MEAT MARKETS THAT CAN TRACE THE SOURCE OF THE MEAT WE PUT ON OUR TABLE.  THE 152 BILLION COULD BEST BE SPENT ON INSURING THE SAFETY OF OUR FOOD, RATHER THAT VISITS TO THE ER AND TIME OFF FROM WORK.

WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON THE PROBLEM?

FREQUENTLY I SEE A MAN WALKING ON RIVER AVE, WHO IS WEARING RED, WHITE AND BLUE ATTIRE, AND CARRYING AN AMERICAN FLAG.  I ASSUME HE IS A VETERAN. I SALUTE HIM FOR HIS PATRIOTISM. I READ ABOUT VETERANS WHO ARE HAVING A TOUGH TIME GETTING BACK INTO CIVILIAN LIFE, PERHAPS FINDING A JOB OR JUST NOT BEING UNDERSTOOD BY THOSE HE DEALS WITH EVERYDAY.  NO VETERAN WHO WANTS A JOB SHOULD BE OUT OF WORK, BUT MANY ARE UNEMPLOYED TODAY, DUE TO THE ECONOMY.  THIS IS A NATIONAL SHAME.

I THINK MOST VETS HAVE PROBLEMS GETTING BACK INTO SOCIETY--MAKING THE TRANSITION FROM COMBAT TO THE WORKADAY WORLD.  I RECALL COMING TO THE SUDDEN REALIZATION THAT I WOULD HAVE TO GET A JOB, WHEN I RETURNED, AND I HAD TO PAY FOR ANYTHING I WANTED, RATHER THAN HAVE IT AUTOMATICALLY ISSUED TO ME.

A LOT OF ORGANIZATIONS ARE WILLING TO HELP VETERANS.  MOST HAVE SERVICE OFFICERS.  CONTACT THEM OR ALLEGAN COUNTY HAS A DEPARTMENT OF VETERAN SERVICES WHERE TAMMY GRIGG CAN HELP WITH VETERANS SERVICES.  THE NUMBER IS 269-673-0501.  I HOPE THIS HELPS SOME VET.-
