WE DON'T HAVE TO GO FAR IN MICHIGAN TO BE ON "VACATION."  TUESDAY WE TRAVELED, AVOIDING THE FREEWAY AND GOING THROUGH THE SMALL TOWNS THAT WE MAY HAVE MISSED BEFORE.  OUR DESTINATION WAS LAKE CITY WHICH IS LOCATED A SHORT DISTANCE FROM CADILLAC.  I MADE AN "OFFICIAL" VISIT TO LAKE CITY FOR MAYORS EXCHANGE DAY 1973, WHEN I WAS THE VISITING MAYOR.  I WANTED TO SEE THE TOWN AGAIN AT MY OWN PACE.  WE ALSO VISITED MCBAIN, FREMONT AND A MULTITUDE OF OTHER TOWNS  ITS THE LAKES THAT MAKE MICHIGAN BEAUTIFUL AND BEING TOURISTS EVEN FOR A DAY IS FUN,  REMEMBER TOURISM HELPS THE ECONOMY OF OUR STATE.

    HAVE YOU TRAVELED MICHIGAN LATELY?

THE PRESIDENT IS COMING TO VISIT TODAY!   THE PRESIDENT IS COMING TO WELCOME THE THE NEW BATTERY MANUFACTURING FACILITY.  THIS IS GREAT PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR HOLLAND AND COULD HELP ATTRACT FUTURE MANUFACTURING  TO OUR AREA.

WHAT IS SOMEWHAT TROUBLING TO ME IS THE FACT THAT HE HAS CHOSEN TO HONOR A FOREIGN BASED COMPANY WITH HIS VISIT, WHILE IGNORING AN AMERICAN BATTERY MANUFACTURING FACILITY (JCI) THAT IS PRESENTLY BUILDING A BIG EXPANSION JUST A COUPLE OF MILES AWAY.

ALL THE PROPOSED BATTERY MANUFACTURING IS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT AMERICANS ARE WILLING TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO ELECTRIC CARS.  WILL THEY?

    WILL YOU?

ARIZONA IS STILL A HOT TOPIC. THOUGH THE STATE IS NOT SOLICITING FUNDS, THEY HAVE RECEIVED HALF A MILLION DOLLARS FROM PEOPLE IN THE STATE AND OUTSIDERS WHO SYMPATHIZE WITH THE PLIGHT THE STATE FINDS ITSELF IN.

I RECENTLY LEARNED RHODE ISLAND ALREADY HAS A SIMILAR LAW IN PLACE LIKE THE IMMIGRATION LAW PASSED BY ARIZONA,  OTHER STATES ARE READYING A LAW IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FAILS TO ACT TO STEM THE TIDE OF ILLEGALS.  SOME PEOPLE IN ARIZONA WANT TO SECEDE FROM THE USA IF THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE "PUNISHES" ARIZONA WITH A LAWSUIT.

DO YOU THINK THE FEDS SHOULD WAIT UNTIL WE CAN SEE HOW THE ARIZONA IMMIGRATION BILL WORKS?

CONGRESSMAN TRENT FRANKS OF ARIZONA HAS INTRODUCED A BILL CALLED THE "NATIONAL BORDER AND HOMELAND SECURITY ACT OF 201O."

THE BILL WOULD REQUIRE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO SEND 6000 NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO THE ARIZONA-MEXICO BORDER AND REQUIRE THE HIRING AND TRAINING OF 6000 MORE FULL-TIME BORDER PATROL AGENTS.

THE BILL WOULD ALSO EXTEND THE JURISDICTION OF AGENTS TO FEDERAL PARKS AND REFUGES WHERE MOST ILLEGALS CROSS.  THEIR POWERS ARE NOW LIMITED IN THOSE LOCATIONS.

DO YOU THINK HIS BILL WILL SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY IN THE PELOSI LED HOUSE?

A LOT HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT WORLD WAR II. THE MOST RECENT HBO MINISERIES IS ABOUT THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC.  ONE OF THE BOOKS THAT WAS A PART OF THE MAKING OFTHE MINISERIES WAS "STRONG MEN ARMED" BY ROBERT LECKIE. I JUST FINISHED READING IT.  THE BOOK, TELLS IN DETAIL ABOUT EVERY ISLAND HOPPING BATTLE THAT THE U. S. MARINES TOOK PART IN FROM GUADAICANAL TO OKINAWA-THIRTEEN DIFFERENT BATTLES.  THE AUTHOR WRITES FROM EXPERIENCE. HE WAS A SCOUT AND MACHINE GUNNER IN THE FIRST MARINE DIVISION.

THE MARINES WERE A GREAT PART OF THE WINING OF THE WAR BUT THEY DID IT WITH THEIR BRAVERY AND BLOOD-A PROUD TRADITION, BUT WHAT A PRICE.

    THANK YOU MARINES!

DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION, PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT ESTABLISHED SOME PROGRAMS THAT HELPED THE UNEMPLOYED.  WE HAD THE CCC (CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORP) THAT EMPLOYED MANY YOUNG MEN THAT PLANTED MILLIONS OF TREES IN MICHIGAN AND OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.  THE PAY WAS NOT GREAT, BUT HOUSING AND FOOD WERE FURNISHED IN ARMY LIKE BARRACKS.  WE STILL SEE THE RESULTS AND THE EXPENDITURE FROM THE FEDERAL BUDGET WAS SMALL.  THEN WE HAD THE WPA (WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION) WHICH PUT MANY UNEMPLOYED TO WORK AT PUBLIC PROJECTS-ROADS, BRIDGES AND BEAUTIFICATION.  WE STILL BENEFIT FROM THEIR EFFORTS.  WE HAD THE RFC (RECONSTRUCTION FINANCE CORPORATION) TO HELP BUSINESS GET BACK IN THE MAINSTREAM, WITH GOVERNMENT HELP.

WE DID NOT HAVE UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION, BUT MONEY INVESTED BY GOVERNMENT WENT DIRECTLY INTO PAYCHECKS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.  IT HELPED MILLIONS GET THROUGH THE GREAT DEPRESSION.  ONE OTHER PROGRAM WAS THE NYA (NATIONAL YOUTH ADMINISTRATION) THAT HELPED YOUNG PEOPLE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL WITH THINGS LIKE CUSTODIAL WORK A FEW HOURS A WEEK.  AS WAR SEEMED IMMINENT, MANY YOUNG PEOPLE WERE TRAINED TO WORK IN THE WAR PLANTS UNDER NYA.

YES EVENTUALLY IT WAS THE WAR THAT PUT THE COUNTRY BACK ON ITS FEET, BUT THE DIRECT HELP WAS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE STIMULUS PACKAGE NOW. THE TAXPAYERS GOT A BIGGER BANG FOR THEIR BUCK

COMPARE THE ROOSEVELT PROGRAMS TO THE PROGRAMS WE HAVE TODAY TO HELP THE UNEMPLOYED.  WORK WITH A SMALL PAY CHECK OR UNEMPLOYMENT PAY, DEPENDENT ON THE WHIMS OF CONGRESS.

    WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

A FOURTH OF JULY I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER IS JULY 4, 1945.  I WAS ON THE ISLAND OF LUZON-PART OF THE SIXTH INFANTRY DIVISION, MOPPING UP UNITS OF GENERAL YAMASHITA'S FORCES.  THE JAPS WERE DUG IN ON A RIDGE WE COULD SEE ABOUT 2000 YARDS AHEAD OF US, HOLDING UP OUR PROGRESS ON OLD HIGHWAY FOUR.  OUR COMMANDER CALLED FOR AN AIR STRIKE.

SHORTLY SEVERAL P-38S (THE PLANE THE JAPS CALLED THE "TWIN TAIL DEVIL" CAME SWOOPING DOWN ON THE RIDGE, STRAFING IT WITH ALL GUNS BLAZING.  NEXT THE PLANES MADE ANOTHER PASS, DROPPING NAPALM BOMBS WHICH SKITTERED ALONG THE RIDGE, SPREADING FLAMES FOR QUITE A DISTANCE.  THE P-38S LEFT ONLY TO BE REPLACED BY B-25 BOMBERS WHICH DROPPED 500 POUND BOMBS AND THEN STRAFED THE RIDGE.  IT WAS A SPECTACULAR SHOW AND MANY OF US WATCHED, CERTAIN THAT NOTHING COULD LIVE THROUGH THAT, BUT OF COURSE THEY WERE DUG IN AND MANY SURVIVED, BUT WE HAD SOFTENED UP THE POSITION SUFFICIENTLY SO THAT OUR UNITS COULD PROCEED WITH OUR MISSION.

A FOURTH OF JULY I WILL NEVER FORGET.  IN AUGUST GENERAL YAMASHITA CAME DOWN OUT OF THE HILLS AND SURRENDERED.  THE WAR FOR THE ISLAND WAS OVER.

TIME TO CELEBRATE THE INDEPENDENCE OF AMERICA!  FOR MOST ITS A TIME OF FAMILY PARTIES, COOKOUTS AND FIREWORKS.

WHEN I WAS A BOY, FIREWORKS WERE NOT ILLEGAL.  EVERY YEAR WE WOULD ORDER OUR "YOUNG AMERICA" ASSORTMENT FROM SPENCER FIREWORKS COMPANY IN POLK OHIO.  THERE WAS AN ANXIOUS TIME OF WAITING UNTIL THE RAILWAY EXPRESS OFFICE NOTIFIED US THAT OUR SHIPMENT WAS IN.  THE FAMILY CONTRIBUTED TO THE PURCHASE ($5.95).  WE GOT TOGETHER FOURTH OF JULY NIGHT FOR THE FESTIVITIES.  WE WOULD ORDER A FEW EXTRA OF THE "SLEDGEHAMMERS" NOW KNOWN AS THE M-80'S. MY DAD WANTED TO PUT ONE IN OUR MAILBOX, BUT MY UNCLE SUGGESTED PUTTING IT ON TOP OF THE MAILBOX.  IT BLEW A HOLE IN THE MAILBOX, I COULD PUT MY FIST THROUGH.  THE REST WAS ROMAN CANDLES, SKY ROCKETS AND LESS POWERFUL EXPLOSIVES THAT WERE SPECTACULAR AND NOISY. IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE AND NO BODY GOT HURT EXCEPT THE MAILBOX.  OF COURSE IT WAS ALL DONE UNDER PARENTAL SUPERVISION AND WE HAD A NICE OPEN AREA FOR THE DISPLAY.

NOW WE WATCH THE PUBLIC DISPLAYS WITH A BIG CROWD AND MORE SPECTACULAR FIREWORKS.  ITS SAFER AND DAD WON'T HAVE TO PUT UP A NEW MAILBOX.

HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH AND REMEMBER THOSE WHO DIED TO GIVE US THIS DAY TO CELEBRATE OUR FREEDOM.

WE COULD BE INUNDATED BY ASIAN CARP, IF THEY ARE ALLOWED TO GET INTO THE GREAT LAKES.

SENATOR DEBBIE STABENOW OF MICHIGAN AND SENATOR DICK DURBIN OF ILLINOIS ARE INTRODUCING A BILL IN THE SENATE  AND  CONGRESSMAN DAVID CAMP IN THE HOUSE, TO PERMANENTLY SEPARATE THE WATERS OF THE MISSISSIPPI AND THE GREAT LAKES, TO PREVENT THE CARP FROM INVADING LAKE MICHIGAN.  MANY OTHERS FROM BOTH PARTIES HAVE SIGNED ON TO THIS BILL, SO IT STANDS A GOOD CHANCE OF ACTION.

HOW THIS IS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED, HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED.  THE PRESIDENT WILL PROBABLY APPOINT A CARP CZAR.
