THIS GEM FROM FDR WAS IN THE LAST AMREICAN LEGION PUBLICATION.

TO DOLE OUT RELIEF IN THIS WAY IS TO ADMINISTER A NARCOTIC, A SUBTLE DESTROUYER OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.  IT IS INIMICAL TO THE DICTATES OF SOUND POLICY.  IT IS IN VIOLATION OF THE TRADITIONS OF AMERICA.  WORK MUST BE FOUND FOR ABLE-BODIED BUT DESTITUTE WORKERS. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MUST AND SHALL QUIT THIS BUSINESS OF RELIEF.   JAN 4, 1935.  FDR'S message to congress.

HOW SERIOUS ARE WE ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?

A recent march in Washington tried to call the public's attention to "global warmingm." It mzde me wonder how serious they really are to do something to reduce greenhouses gases to bring this change about or stop the formation of these gases.  I can think of a few things we can all do to help.  PLANT TREES IN YOUR YARD, HAVE MORE HOUSE PLANTS IN YOUR HOME, SELL YOUR CAR AND WALK OR TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. BUNDLE UP YOUR GAS OPERATED LAWN MOWERS, ROTOTILLERS, TRIMMERS ECT.  The old push mowers worked very well and are a good exercise machines.  Trimming can be done with hand operated clippers.  A spade is a good substitute for a Rototiller.  Go to bed early to conserve daylight. These are just a few, but if everyone would participate, we could be doing a good deed for the country.  Feel free to contribute more suggestions.

ITS NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT:

Word is spreading thst Hillary Clinton will be available for public speaking in a few months.  Many groups will be wanting to hear from her, but the tentative fee is expect to be six figures.  At those prices she will not include her cookie recipes.

When Bob Newhart appeared in Holland during Tulip Time, he deplored the thin skinned political correctness we have had forced upon the American people by special interest groups.

We now have several instances of that in the form of the Indian references in football and other sports.  Saugatuck is being attacked by the government over the mascot and name references which would apparently be demeaning to the origional Americans.  I attended school in Dowagiac which now has the same problems with the "Chieftians", which have had that name since 1928.  Perhaps we should name the team the "WIMPS"--something to build team morale and get the fans all stirred up in Pep Meetings.  Kinda makes me wonder how the real wolverines feel about the University of Michigan.  At least we are keeping some "dipstick" busy in Lansing and Washington. ITS TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT DETROIT.

Detroit is part of Michigan and it is in need of help.  The city government of Detroit is trying to make a go of it, but they will have to change their financial wqys to succeed.  That is why we have the power to appoint a temporary overseer--to make sure the money is going where it is needed with no city officials like former Mayor Kilpatrick siphoning off the top for his own benefit.  I'm sure most of us could find things Detroit can do without. What they need is a a fresh start to clean up the dilapidated properties amd bring the city down to a manageable size and one the residents can support.  I have not visited the city for some time, but I have talked to many who have.  The first inclination is to get a bulldozer and clean it up for farmland.  Many still call it home and do now want to move.  Henry FordII had a good start when the foreign car sales, began to make a dent on American car sales.  Now Detroit needs more to bring it back to the goode old days.  We cant sit on the West side of the State and ignore the problems.

ALL MY LIFE I'VE BEEN CELBRATING VALENTINES DAY.  FROM THE TIME I WAS IN GRADE SCHOOL AND GAVE VALENTINE TO MOST OF THE CLASS TO THE PRESENT DAY SOMETHING FOR THE WIFE VALENTINES DAY.  I RECALL A DAY WHEN WE EXCHANGED NAMES IN SCHOOL AND I GOT THE NAME OF THE UGLIEST GIRL IN THE CLASS.  THIE FIRST VALENTINES WERE THE FANCY LACE TRIMMED KIND AND I STILL HAVE A COUPLE OF THOSE BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO NICE TO THROW AWAY.

IT WAS ALWAYS A GAME, JUGGLING, FLOWERS, CANDY OR SOME OTHER FANCY GIFT TO MAKE "HER" LIKE ME.  SOMETIMES IT WORKED--SOMETIMES NOT.  SOMETIMES I SPENT MY LAST BUCK ON A GIFT.

THIS YEAR I GOT SOME NICE GROWING RED TULIPS AND WE CAN BOTH ENJOY THOSE FOR SOME WEEKS. I HOPE YOUR HOLIDAY WAS SPECIAL

    STRANGE BEDFELLOWS

The American Civil Liberties Union is joining the tea party activists inopposing the use of armed drones to kill suspected terrorists, even American Citizens.

Would it be better to send in two divisions of infantry?

ITS TIME WE BEGIN TO TAKE NOTICE OF NORTH KOREA AND THE SPOILED BRAT THAT IS RUNNING THE COUNTRY.  OF COURSE WE SHOULD HAVE PUT OUR FOOT DOWN WHEN JOE STALIN REFUSED TO HAVE ELECTIONS IN THE PORTION OF KOREA THAT RUSSIAN TROOPS WERE "TEMPORARILY" OCCUPYING.  THEY WERE TO HAVE ELECTIONS AND LEAVE.  WHEN THEY LEFT, THEY LEFT THE CHINESE IN CHARGE.  AFTR THE KOREAN WAR.  WE HAVE BEEN KOWTOWING TO THEM EVER SINCE.  ITS TIME NORTH KOREA BEGINS TO FEED THEIR PEOPLE INSTEAD OF BUILDING NUCLEAR TOYS.  THEY NEED A HEAVY HAND, NOT PLATITUDES.

Monday morning, I woke up to the news that the Pope was stepping down due to health reasons.  Some how we seem to feel that the Pope is forever until he dies.  What a difficult job.  He must be a learned man. This Pope is said to be a fine theologian.  He served during a difficult time.  He preached peace while the world seemed bent on war.  He preached morality while the world, led by America was speeding into depravity.  Sma;l wonder he is stepping down.  He seemed to be well-liked by Catholic and non-Catholic alike.  Let us pray for him in his retirement.

I knew something dire was about to happen when suddenly Blondie diaappeared from the pages of the Holland Sentinel.  Just a few days later, the announcement came that the paper would stop publishing a Saturday edition.  Since I usually get up early, eat breakfast and read the newspaper.  I thought I better start thinking about what I was going to do to fill the time I uaually spent on sbsorbing the news and doing the crossword.  I had not even begun the list when BAM! Along comes the United Stated Postoffice with the declaration that they would cease delivery of mail in August.  I thought of the millions of people, especially seniors that would be standing by their windows on that first Saturday of non-delivery looking in vain for the delivery of those bundles of catalogs and boxholders to read on the weekend.

I think I will sleep in until the time for the usual mail delivery is past. Any other good suggestions?

IS ANYBODY HAPPIER BECAUSE YOU PASSED HIS WAY?

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THAT YOU SPOKE TO HIM TODAY?

THE DAY IS ALMOST OVER AND ITS TOILING TIME IS THROUGH,

IS THERE ANYONE TO UTTER  NOW A KINDLY WORD OF YOU?

CAN YOU SAY TONIGHT, IN PARTING WITH THE DAY THAT'S SLIPPING FAST,

THAT YOU HELPED A SINGLE BROTHER OF THE MANY THAT YOU PASSED?

IS A SINGLE HEART REJOICING OVER WHAT YOU DID OR SAID?

DOES THE MAN WHOSE HOPES WERE FADING, NOW WITH COURAGE LOOK AHEAD?

DID YOU WASTE THE DAY, OR LOSE IT? WAS IT WELL OR SORELY SPENT?

DID YOU LEAVE A TRAIL OF KINDNESS, OR A SCAR OF DISCONTENT?

AS YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES IN SLUMBER, DO YOU THINK THAT GOD WILL SAY,

"YOU HAVE EARNED ONE MORE TOMORROW BY THE WORK YOU DID TODAY"?

SOMETHING BY JOHN HILL, TO DWELL ON THROUGH THE DAY.
