Flying Dutchmen Top Albion
Logan Sikkenga recorded his first two goals of the season to help the Hope men’s soccer team defeat Albion College 3-1 on Wednesday.
The junior back from Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS) scored twice in the first 25 minutes to give the No. 24-ranked Flying Dutchmen a 2-0 halftime lead.
Sikkenga’s first goal came off a header in the 14th minute with an assist from senior Jason Muller of Petoskey (Petoskey) on a corner kick.
Sikkenga struck again at 24:28 when he headed in a throw-in from senior Grant Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS).
Muller added his fourth goal of the season in the 64th minute to push Hope’s lead to 3-0. Junior midfielder Cameron Dice of Allendale (Hudsonville Unity Christian) had the assist.
Goalie Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) made six saves for Hope, which improved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) record.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they host Trine University. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Flying Dutch Sweep Kalamazoo
Middle hitter Mari Schoolmaster and the second-ranked Hope College volleyball team pushed their win streak to three matches on Wednesday with a 3-0 sweep of Kalamazoo College.
The Flying Dutch improved to 15-1 overall and 6-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play.
Schoolmaster, a senior from Portage (Portage Central HS), led Hope with 11 kills and a .647 attack percentage.
Junior outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) added 10 kills for the Flying Dutch.
Senior Courtney Earles of Kentwood (East Kentwood HS) and junior outside hitter Amy VanderStoep of Holland (West Ottawa HS) had eight kills apiece.
Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) had 34 assists.
The Flying Dutch return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Albion at 6:30 p.m..
