Top-ranked Hope, Calvin volleyball teams draw opposite side of NCAA D-III bracket

The Hope and Calvin volleyball teams could meet again this season, but with a national championship up for serve.

The top two-ranked teams in NCAA Division III and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-champions are on opposite sides of the bracket released on Monday.


Calvin, which edged Hope in the MIAA Tournament final on Saturday, is hosting an eight-team regional beginning Thursday.

The Flying Dutch are headed to Elmhurst (Ill.) College for its eight-team regional, also beginning on Thursday.

Game times are to be announced later this afternoon.

Eight regional champions will head to Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse to play for a Division III title on Nov. 21-23. Calvin was national runner-up in 2012, losing to St. Thomas (Minn.) in five sets at DeVos.

Calvin (29-1) will face Penn State-Behrend (22-8) in a first round match on Thursday. Other first round matches will see Wittenberg (23-8) going up against Bluffton (16-18), Chicago (26-10) going up against Buffalo State (25-9) and Mount Union (30-4) going up against Carnegie-Mellon (25-9).

The regional semifinals are Friday at Elmhurst, while the championship match is Saturday.

Hope (29-2 overall) will face Webster (Mo.) on Thursday at a time to be determined. Webster is 26-8 on the season.

Other first-round matchups are Elmhurst feature DePauw, Ind. (25-6) vs. Otterbein, Ohio (26-7), Washington-St. Louis (26-7) vs. Wisconsin-Whitewater (27-11), and Dominican (Ill.) vs. Elmhurst (35-4).

The regional semifinals are Friday at Elmhurst, while the championship match is Saturday.

This is the Flying Dutch’s sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 11th overall.

Calvin is making its 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA III Tournament and its 23rd appearance overall.  The Knights won a national title in 2010.

Tickets for the Nov. 21-23 national championships at Hope are on sale.

Three-day, all-session tickets are available for purchase now. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for students/children.

Single-day prices are $8 for adults and $6 for students/children also are available for purchase now.

Seating will be general within designated sections.
