by Carolyn Binder

The Hope men’s golf team grabbed control of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) race in convincing fashion on Thursday, winning the 18-hole jamboree it hosted by 15 strokes.

Juniors Collin Breit of Muskegon (Western Michigan Christian HS) and Ben Lewis of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) both carded even-par rounds of 71 at Wuskowhan Players Club to share medalist honors and lead the Flying Dutchmen to a winning score of 290.

Hope overtook Calvin for the league lead heading into Monday’s final MIAA Jamboree at Watermark Golf Club in Grand Rapids. The Flying Dutchmen lead Calvin by 20 strokes and third-place Trine by 22.

Freshman Winton Munch of Traverse City (Traverse City Central HS) chipped in a third-place 73 for Hope, while junior Ben Lanting of Littleton, Colo. (Front Range Christian HS) tied for sixth with a 75. Hope had five of the top 10 rebounds as junior Evan Telzerow of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Northern HS) shot a ninth-place 77.

Hope finished first at a MIAA Jamboree for the fourth time this season.

Trine finished second on Thursday with a 305. Alma placed third at 314, while Calvin took fourth at 316.

The winner of the MIAA fall championship will host the final two rounds of the 54-hole spring tournament that determines the league’s qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championships.
