Eight Flying Dutch Claim All-MIAA Honors

Six Hope College swimmers and two divers are among the All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Swimming & Diving honorees for the 2013-14 season.

Four swimmers earned the recognition for the second time in their swimming careers: senior Maria Kieft of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS), sophomore Klare Northuis of Holland (Holland HS), sophomore Jorgie Watson of Grand Rapids (Catholic Central HS) and Lindsay Wiederhold of Plainwell (Plainwell HS).

One diver became a two-time, All-MIAA honoree: sophomore Sarah Sherican of Richmond, Ind. (Richmond HS).

First-time honorees were: junior diver Erica Dunham of Rockford (Rockford HS), swimmer Michelle Hance of Noblesville, Ind. (Noblesville HS), and freshman Molly Meyer of South Bend, Ind. (John Adams HS).

Four Flying Dutchmen Named All-MIAA

Hope College put three swimmers and one diver on the 2013-14 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s Swimming & Diving Team.

Senior Jake Hunt of Muskegon (Mona Shores HS) earned All-MIAA honors for the second time in his career.

Sophomore Jeff Zita of Holland (Holland Christian HS) and freshman Zach Diener of Lake Orion (Lake Orion HS) are first-team honorees as swimmers for the first time.

Freshman diver Jean-Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras (The American School) also represented Hope on the All-MIAA team.

The Hope College men’s track & field team posted one second-place performance and two fourth-place ones during the Grand Valley State University Tune-up meet on Friday in Allendale.

The non-scoring meet was held indoors.

Senior James Rogers of Saginaw (Valley Lutheran HS) finished runner-up in the 1 mile run. He had a time of 4 minutes, 13.60 seconds.

Senior Steffon Mayhue of Holland (Holland HS) placed fourth in the long jump. He had a leap of 21 feet, 9 inches.

Senior David Dolfin of Hingham, Wis. (Ootsburg HS), took fourth in the triple jump. He had a leap of 41 feet, 3 ¾ inches. Teammate Luke Washington, a sophomore from Bolingbrook, Ill. (Timothy Christian HS), was fifth at 38-9 ¾.

Junior Benjamin Zank of Midland (H.H. Dow HS) came in sixth in the 5,000 meters. He had a run of 15:27.27.

Freshman Ross Whitman of Monroe (Saint Mary Catholic Central HS) finished seventh in the 60 hurdles. He posted a time of 9.02 seconds.

The Hope College women’s track & field team recorded four top eight performances at the Grand Valley State University Tune-up meet on Friday in Allendale.

Sophomore Michelle Kerr of Dearborn (Divine Child HS) placed fourth in the 5,000 meters during the non-scoring, indoor competition. She posted a time of 18 minutes, 36.42 seconds.

Hope’s 4 x 400 relay came in fourth. Sophomore Jane Pearson of Lake City (Northern Michigan Christian HS), sophomore Aurelie McCarus of Lansing (Catholic Central HS), junior Emily Smith of Pueblo, Colo. (Jackson Hole HS), and senior Caitlin Schwark of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton-Warreville South HS) posted a time of 4:09.25.

Senior Catherine White of Barre, Vt. (Spaulding HS) tied for fifth in the long jump She went 15 feet, 5 ½ inches.

Schwark was eighth in the triple jump at 31-5 ¾.

Junior Jordyn Severt of Traverse City (West HS) placed eighth in the high jump by clearing 4-11.

Flying Dutchmen Skate Past Michigan State

The Flying Dutchmen (23-3-2-1 overall) advanced to play Grand Valley State University at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, February 22, at Georgetown Ice Arena for a spot in the national tournament.
