No. 2-ranked Flying Dutch Sweeps Alma On Road
Outside hitter Anna Lynch and the second-ranked Hope volleyball team cruised to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 win at Alma on Friday night in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action.
The Flying Dutch pushed their win streak to five matches as they improved to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in MIAA matches. They are in second place in league play.
Lynch, a junior from Lake Odessa (Lakewood HS), led Hope by totaling a match-high 11 kills. It was her third highest single-game effort of the season.
Senior middle hitter Mari Schoolmaster of Portage (Portage Central HS), junior outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS) and junior Amy VanderStoep of Holland (West Ottawa HS) added eight kills apiece for the Flying Dutch.
Senior middle hitter Courtney Earles of Kentwood (East Kentwood HS) chipped in seven kills.
Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) directed the Hope offense with 36 kills.
The Flying Dutch return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 4:30 p.m. when they host MIAA rival Olivet at DeVos Fieldhouse Volleyball Court.

Flying Dutchmen Second At Lansing Community College Invitational
Ben Zank’s 8K run of 25 minutes, 54.9 seconds led the Hope men’s cross country team to a runner-up performance at the Lansing Community College Invitational on Friday.
Zank, a junior from Midland (H.H. Dow HS), finished 10th place overall out of 277 runners.
Senior Samuel Pederson of Mt. Prospect, Ill., (Prospect HS) took 23rd at 26:15.7.
The Flying Dutchmen also received points from senior James Rogers of Saginaw (Valley Lutheran HS) in 30th at 26:15.7, sophomore Joseph Beemer of St. Joseph (St. Jospeh HS) in 37th at 26:40.0 and freshman Julian Morrison of Aurora, Ill. (Waubonside Valley HS) in 52nd at 27:04.4.
Hope totaled 116 points to trail only Grand Valley State University (46) in the 25-team event.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Flying Dutch Ninth At Lansing Community College Invitational
Senior Sheri McCormack of Holland (West Ottawa HS) ran a second-place time at the Lansing Community College on Friday as the Hope women’s cross country team placed ninth with 233 points.
McCormack finished out of 243 runners with a 6K run of 18 minutes, 9.2 seconds.
The Flying Dutch also received points from freshman Kailey Mattarella of Traverse City (Traverse City Central HS) in 61st at 20:20.8, freshman Jessica Cronau of Dublin, Ohio (Dublin Scioto HS) in 73rd at 20:37.4, freshman Christin Bothe of Dekalb, Ill. (Dekalb HS) in 79th at 20:45.3 and senior Anna Leikert of Grand Rapids (West Catholic HS) in 84th at 20:52.2.
Saginaw Valley State University won with 27 points.
