by Cassandra Basore

The fifth-ranked Hope College volleyball team posted its fifth sweep in as many tries this season, defeating Alma College in three games on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutch won their home opener 25-15, 25-23, 25-11 in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse Main Court crowd of 691.

Hope improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play.

Junior Jenna Grasmeyer led the Flying Dutch with 19 kills and a .425 attack percentage. The outside hitter from Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS) came within two kills of matching the school record for a three-set match she shares with Jacie Fiedler ('10).

Grasmeyer also served six aces, including two to close out the Scots (3-2, 0-1 MIAA).

Hope collected 12 service aces, two short of the school record for a three-set match that was set in 2008 against Trine. Sophomore libero Allie Mitchellof Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Eastern HS) added five aces.

Junior outside hitter Anna Lynchof Lake Odessa (Lakewood HS) contributed seven kills, while junior hitter Amy VanderStoepof Holland (West Ottawa HS) had six.

Sophomore Lauren Hazekampof Fruitport (Fruitport HS) continued her strong start for the Flying Dutch. She netted a team-high 30 assists.

This is Hazekamp's first season as a starter. She replaced the graduated Greer Bratschie, a third-team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American as a senior.

"I'm blessed with really great hitters," Hazekamp said. "They make my good sets really good and my bad sets look good. I also have a really good back row setting me up. They do a lot of the grunt work back there. I don't think they get enough credit."
