Hope Colleges Tyler Brinks finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, last weekend.

The sophomore from Commerce Township, Michigan (Walled Lake Northern HS), clocked a time of 9 minutes, 29.32 seconds to earn a medal at the University of Oregons Hayward Field.

The USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships featured athletes under the age of 20. The two-day meet was a qualifier for the 2014 International Association of Athletics Federations World Junior Championships that run July 22-27 in Eugene.

Hope cross country coach and assistant track & field coach Mark Northuis said the performance was a very good accomplishment for Brinks.

This meet will propel him to new heights as a runner, Northuis said. He represented Hope College very well on the national scene, beating several NCAA Division I athletes.
