by WHTC News

The Hope College women;s basketball team has earned a spot on the 2014 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division III.

The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes women's basketball teams across the nation in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA, and junior/community colleges that carry the highest combined grade point averages inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season.

Coach Brian Morehouse's Flying Dutch recorded a team GPA of 3.527 that tied for the 13 th highest in Division III.

"I am very proud of our players for achieving such a high grade point average and balancing their lives the way that they do," Morehouse said. "To achieve this team grade point average shows that it is possible to be very talented in the classroom and on the basketball court. I think its also a testament to our players and the diversity of majors they have nursing, engineering, health professional, management and teaching."

Hope was one of seven NCAA tournament-qualifying teams to make the honor roll. The Flying Dutch finished the 2013-14 season with a 28-1 record while winning Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season and tournament titles. Hope advanced to the second round of the national tournament.

"Being a student-athlete is a challenging feat, but at the same time it is also very rewarding and to see the GPAs that these institutions have collected is impressive," said WBCA COO Shannon Reynolds. "The WBCA congratulates all of these student-athletes and their coaches for their hard work and dedication."

A teams GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by a WBCA-member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
