Hope Tops Nation In Home Basketball and Volleyball Attendance

Hope College topped NCAA Division III in home attendance in three sports during the 2013-14 school year: volleyball, womens basketball and mens basketball.

It is the sixth consecutive season Hope has led the nation in both mens and womens basketball home attendance.

Hope co-athletic director Tim Schoonveld called the feats great recognition for the colleges men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams, Hope College and the Holland community.

This is further evidence that we have the best fans in the nation, Schoonveld said. The support by the college community and greater Holland community is a continued blessing for all of us within the athletic department. We are grateful for this partnership that allows for lives to be impacted in many ways and our thanks go out to all who support our teams so faithfully. We are proud of this recognition.

In mens basketball, Hope averaged 2,459 fans over 13 home games at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutchmen totaled 31,969 fans. The average Division III home attendance was 393 per game. Second-place Wooster, Ohio, averaged 1,801 fans.

This is the 12thtime in a row and 16thtime overall Hope has been the mens basketball attendance leader. The Flying Dutchmen had a 10-3 home record during the 2013-14 season. Hope also led Division III in home mens basketball attendance in 2012-13, 2011-2, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2007-08, 2006-07, 2005-06, 2004-05, 2003-04, 2002-03, 1998-99, 1995-96, 1990-91 and 1983-84.

In womens basketball, Hope averaged 1,094 fans over 13 games at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutch totaled 14,217 fans. The average Division III home attendance was 230 per game. Second-place Franklin, Indiana, averaged 967 fans.

This is the sixth time in a row Hope has topped the nation in home attendance. The Flying Dutch went 16-0 at DeVos Fieldhouse during the 2013-14 season. Hope also led Division III in home womens basketball attendance seven times: 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09 and 2005-06.

In volleyball, Hope averaged 867 fans over 14 matches at DeVos Fieldhouse. The Flying Dutch totaled 12,132 fans. Second-place Wartburg, Iowa, averaged a home crowd of 855 over 10 matches. Hope posted a 13-1 home record this season. The Flying Dutch reached the national quarterfinals of the Division III Championships they hosted.
