WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Mitchel Achien’g and Jenna Breuker each set Hope College women’s track and field indoor records on Friday at the North Central College Pat Heenan Invitational in Naperville, Illinois. Achien’g surpassed her own top marks in the 60-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Breuker eclipsed her best in the shot put. In the triple jump, Achien’g recorded a fourth-place leap of 11.03 meters (36 feet, 2 ¼ inches). The senior from Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu School) previous best was 11.01 meters (36-1 ½). In the 60-meter hurdles, Achien’g clocked a fourth-place time of 9.10 seconds to surpass her previous best of 9.22. In the shot put, Breuker posted a fourth-place shot put of 12.17 meters (39-11 ¼). The sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS) threw 12.03 meters (39-4 1/2) last season.
MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Hope College’s Korey Derr sprinted to a runner-up performance in the 60-meter dash at the North Central College Invitational on Friday in Naperville, Illinois The senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Northview HS) clocked a time of 7.01 seconds during the finals. He finished two one-hundredths of a second behind the University of Chicago’s Nike Reid. Two high jumpers scored for the Flying Dutchmen: senior Josh Izenbart of Glenwood, Illinois (Homewood-Flossmoor) in fifth place at 1.93 meters (6 feet, 4 inches) and Jared Lowe in seventh at 1.88 meters (6-2).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The second-ranked Hope College women's basketball team improved to 23-0 overall last week with a 69-43 home win against Saint Mary's College on Wednesday and a 78-46 win at Alma College on Saturday. Junior forward Ashleigh Thomas of Shelby Township, Michigan (Lutheran North HS) scored a team-high 15 points against Saint Mary's. Junior guard Lauren Newman of Flushing, MIchigan (Flushing) netted a game-high 21 points against Alma. Hope moved one win of at least a share of an MIAA championship.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The 28th-ranked Hope College women’s tennis team dropped two matches to nationally ranked opponents over the weekend at DeWitt Tennis Center. On Saturday, the Flying Dutch lost to No. 8 University of Chicago, 6-3. On Friday, the Flying Dutch fell to No. 29 Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), 6-3. Against Chicago, senior Amanda Bandrowski of Traverse City, Michigan (St. Francis HS), defeated Lauren Park at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, senior Claire Hallock of Lakeland, Florida (Harrison Center) topped Catherine Xu, 6-4, 6-4. Against Case Western Reserve, At No. 2 singles, Bandrowski claimed a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Savannah Bright.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Hope College men's basketball team lost last week at Adrian College, 71-65, on Wednesday, and at home to Kalamazoo College, 91-72. Junior forward Preston Granger of Lansing, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS) averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds over the two-game stretch.
