HOLLAND, MI (WHTC AM/FM, June 3, 2023) – While many residents from and visitors to the Lakeshore enjoyed the summer-like weather conditions on Saturday, members of the Holland Department of Public Safety spent much of their day at the Louis Padnos recycling complex off of Pine Avenue.
According to Fire Operations Captain Chris Tinney, crews were dispatched at 12:24 PM on a report of a small fire, but when firefighters tried to douse the smoldering flames, it became apparent that the blaze extended further underneath the initial pile. Describing the efforts as a “defensive operation,” Tinney said that operators from Padnos were very helpful in moving debris in order for firefighters to drench the interior flames. He also issued an precautionary advisory of possible pollutants drifting downwind as a result of the blaze.
There were no injuries initially reported, and no cause of the fire was immediately determined.
